The Aegean Swim Cover: A New Pattern

Ok you guys, after three long years, I am pleased to present The Aegean Swim Cover!

When I made these simple beach cover ups with towels way back in the summer of twenty oh ten, I had no idea that three years later they would still be one of our most popular posts and one of the most pinned items from our blog.  I get requests for a pattern for these all the time here at Crafterhours, and as soon as I opened the Hey June shop, I started getting requests over there too!

So, the people have spoken, and I have delivered!  The Aegean Swim Cover is a beginner-friendly pattern with 4 options: a dress, a tunic, a ruffle dress, and a raglan sleeved shirt for boys.  It comes in a wide range of sizes from 18 months – 12 years.  The pattern is designed to be made with beach towels, and makes use of existing hems to save you time and make the finished garment look clean and professional.  There are also directions if you would like to use terry cloth yardage though.

As always, this pattern includes full digitally illustrated sewing directions and a digitally drawn pattern, along with directions for printing, assembling, cutting, and tips to customize your swim cover.  There is also a tutorial for an optional kangaroo pocket for all those special shells and rocks they’re sure to pick up.

Make a few of these for your kiddos this summer and you can stop lugging bulky towels to the pool and beach.  Every style fits generously to guarantee easy on/easy off so (theoretically) kids can dress themselves while mom relaxes by the pool with a good book and a cold drink (theoretically, remember?)

A word to the wise: I’ve probably received just as many requests for custom orders as I have for a pattern.  So if you have your own sewing business, I would highly recommend that you purchase the License to Sell and start raking in the dough.  It’s an easy sew and an easy sell!  They would also make fantastic summer birthday presents!

The Aegean Swim Cover is available for purchase now in the Hey June shop!  Summer is almost here and the pools are open, so go grab your copy today!

Or, for a chance to win a free copy, just leave a comment here telling me your favorite beach in the world.  I’ll pick 3 winners on Friday!  Giveaway open to anyone in the world with a valid email address, void where prohibited.  Only one comment per person.  Please make sure you leave your email address or link it to your profile so I can contact you.  {Giveaway now closed.  Winners announced on our Facebook page.}
Happy Sewing & Swimming!

    My favorite beach is Kawailoa Beach on the North Shore of Oahu. Now known as Turtle Beach for all the green sea turtles who come onshore to bask in the sun.

    My favorite beach was on an island in the Bahamas. Not sure of the name as we were on a sailboat cruise to get there. The best part was the amazing color of the blue water (and going with no kids!!).

    We’re huge fans of Madeira Beach in the Tampa/Clearwater area of Florida!!! St John’s Pass is a lot of fun and we never fail to see tons of dolphins jumping and playing!
    BTW I’ve been watching for this pattern probably as long as you’ve been designing it! :D

    Lovely! My favourite beach is Sant Salvador – a tiny place near Barcelona in Spain. Nothing special objectively, but very special to me :-)

    I rather enjoyed the beaches on the island of Corfu. Currently, my favourite beach is Holmes Beach on Anna Maria Island in Florida. I’m hoping it stops raining by Friday so I can visit it again!

    These are adorable! My girl definitely needs a new cover up this summer.
    I grew up on cape cod so I’d have to say my favorite beach is anywhere close to home.

    Kings Beach Caloundra or Noosa – both are a short drive up the coast from Brisbane. We usually can still swim on a winter day in Queensland and our kids are 1 week away from school holidays. Look out beach here we come. i would love to have made these for them!

    No question. The beach on Lake Michigan in Ludington. That’s my hometown, and the sand is like a tropical coast, white and fine. It’s so gorgeous! {nw I miss it even more! Sniff…}

    Hmmm… Favorite beach? I don’t believe I’ve ever been to a beach! (I don’t think the rocky shore of a high mountain lake would qualify.) I’ve lived in Colorado my whole life and haven’t traveled much. But we do go to the pool a lot, so my girls would love these coverups!

    Favorite beach in the world…probably Seaside or Cannon Beach in Oregon. Not so swim-friendly, but gorgeous and so peaceful. Hawaii ain’t too shabby either…maybe I should change my answer to “any beach on Maui.”

    I would have to say that my favorite beach is New Smyrna Beach in Florida. We enjoy going there everytime we travel to Florida.

    When I was studying in the Dominican Republic, we went to this beautiful, practically untouched beach called Bay of Eagles. All Dominican beaches are nice, but I think that one would have to be my favorite!

    I havent been to that many beaches, but I will have to say Orange Beach, Ala. My daughter has been wanting to take me there for a while and we are going for a week in July. I am sooooo looking forward to it!I know there are so many beautiful exotic beaches in the world, but I will never see them in person, so Orange Beach it is! Thanks so much for the giveaway and good luck to all who enter!

    Favorite in the world?! It has to be San Vincenzo, Italy where I stayed with my 8 best friends for 3 weeks after graduating school. Ahhh the sand, sun, vino and rest….

    My grandparents have lived in Monterey my whole life, so it’s practically a second home for us. So while it’s not fun to swim in the super cold water there, I have very fond memories of playing on the beaches (Asilomar, Carmel, and Fisherman’s Warf mostly), building sand castles, and having all kinds of adventures with my brother and cousins. We’re headed to Maui in September (first time with kids) and I’d love to make the poncho for my boys!

    I love Santa Cruz! There’s a little beach across from the Cash Store on which I frittered away my college career. Plus, I’m craving that pattern!

    I have been SEARCHING for the perfect beach cover up for my boys. We are spending a week in Gulf Shores at the end of June and can’t wait to make them each one of these! Yay perfect timing!

    This beach cover on Pinterest got me into sewing! Well, trying to… I love our Dutch beaches along the Nordsea, but the ones on the Wadden isle Schiermonnikoog (nice one to pronounce) is by far the best and the widest of Europe I believe.

    My favorite beach is Melbourne Beach, FL. We go at least once a year. In between visits there, we like to go to Pensacola (where we were married).

    I have not been to many beaches in the world but this is the first year in 23 years that we will not be going to Sunset Beach NC. I have gone with my husbands family since we were 15 years old. His parents asked if we would mind going to the mountains this year instead. I am bummed because I love Sunset beach. But look forward to a family trip anywhere.

  23. says

    I love Oriental Parade in Wellington NZ and Williamstown beach here in Melbourne, Australia but my hometown beach of Waitarere which had a shipwreck on it which was fantastic to climb over and jump off of when you’re a kid

    El Capitan State Beach in Southern Ca is my fave. Sea life, tide pools, beach glass, whole sand dollars, driftwood and polished rocks. I could camp there for weeks! Thanks for the giveaway, it looks like a great pattern.
